Choosing an Oak Framed Porch

If you've decided that you want to improve and enhance your home with the addition of an oak framed porch, then you might find the following information to be of some use! Here's some basic but important information to help you choose the best oak framed porch for you and your property.

Planning Permission

Before you go ahead and decide on a design, it's definitely a good idea to check out whether you'll need planning permission for the installation of your oak framed porch. For the vast majority of homeowners, planning permission isn't necessary as the average porch falls under what is known as a 'permitted development'. This means that permission isn't required provided the internal ground floor area of the porch is under three square metres, the height of the porch and any other design features are under three metres above ground level, and the porch is sited over two metres from any boundary of the dwellinghouse or highway.

This is a general guide and you'll need to double check planning requirements and restrictions with your local authority. Listed houses and houses within conversation areas may be subject to extra restrictions, so do your homework and the rest is easy!

Once you've ascertained that you won't need planning permission for your external porch, it's time to choose your design!

Oak Framed Porches

In our experience, generally traditionally styled oak framed porches prove to be the most popular option for older houses, with their curved braces, exposed and highly decorative oak trusses. For more modern properties that date from around pre-war period, glazed oak framed porches provide a more contemporary take on oak frame porch styles. Double glazing in your new porch is a fantastic option as it can help to keep your home warm and free of draughts. We can also supply and fix matching reclaimed tiles to the roof of your oak framed porch, helping the newly built addition to blend and complement your home.

Whatever your tastes and your expectations, the good news is that we can work with you to create bespoke oak framed porches, as all of our products are crafted by our expert tradesmen in our Kent warehouse.
